A spent agave stalk stands as a monument to its life cycle, overlooking the high desert landscape of the Davis Mountains in West Texas. After growing for 10 to 30 years, the agave, or century plant, sends up a single, tall flower stalk, blooms once, and then dies, leaving the stalk to disperse its seeds across the valley below.
