A detailed close-up of the Moon's cratered surface.

Description

The full moon is seen in high detail against the evening sky. This lunar phase occurs when the Earth is located directly between the Sun and the Moon, causing the side of the Moon facing Earth to be fully illuminated. The bright, heavily cratered highlands and the darker, smoother plains known as "maria" (Latin for "seas") are clearly visible on its surface.
