Fort Pulaski: Damaged brick fort, moat, green landscape, blue sky.

Description

Fort Pulaski, a formidable brick fortification on Cockspur Island, Georgia, showcases its battle scars and protective moat under a dramatic sky. Built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Third System of coastal defenses, its purpose was to guard the port of Savannah. However, its walls, now visibly damaged, tell the story of the pivotal April 1862 siege where Union forces, led by Brigadier General Quincy A. Gillmore, used rifled artillery to breach the fort, demonstrating the obsolescence of traditional masonry defenses against new weaponry.
