Obelisk of Theodosius and Blue Mosque, Istanbul.
Description
The ancient Egyptian Obelisk of Theodosius stands tall in Istanbul's historic Sultanahmet Square, with the majestic Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque) gracing the background. Originally erected by Pharaoh Thutmose III in Egypt, the obelisk was brought to Constantinople and re-erected in 390 AD by Roman Emperor Theodosius I to adorn the Hippodrome. Its intricately carved marble base depicts Emperor Theodosius I and his court observing chariot races, symbolizing imperial authority. The iconic Blue Mosque, commissioned by Ottoman Sultan Ahmed I in the early 17th century, represents a later era of architectural splendor and religious devotion in the city.
